How to Make Your Home Sparkle!

Over the ten years I have been running a cleaning business I have developed a number of effective short cuts, which produce great results, without compromising on either hygiene or aesthetics. Here are a few tricks of my trade.

Firstly, stainless steel – my clients always compliment me on the flawless finish I am able to achieve on sinks and taps and want to know my secret. The answer is Viakal – this is not a product endorsement, but I have found that it is the most effective product to dissolve limescale. It just needs to be applied with a sponge, with some pressure behind it (not a cloth, it isn’t as effective); rinsed properly and then polished up with a tea towel.

Whenever I take on a new client, I am always amazed by just how many different cleaning products they have in the house. YOU DON’T NEED SEPERATE PRODUCTS FOR EVERY CLEANING PURPOSE, AND DON’T BE SEDUCED BY THE LATEST TV CLEANING ADS.

Here is the short list of MUST HAVE products which I wouldn’t be without

1. Viakal, not only for stainless steel but because London water is so hard, use it anywhere where limescale builds up, such as around taps and in the shower. However when you are using it on shower screens, make sure you rinse it thoroughly for a smear free finish.

2. E-cloths, they may seem expensive but save money in the long run because you just wash them and use over and over again. The manufacturer says that you don’t even need to use chemicals, however to be on the safe side, I still prefer to use an e-cloth with my general purpose cleaner.  I have found that using an e-cloth is definitely the best way to rinse off chemicals – after all you don’t want to sit in a bleach bath!

3.  The exception to my one cloth rule is the E-cloth glass polishing cloth, for mirrors, TVs and windows, again it’s worth the investment.

4.  One recent cleaning innovation that I am in favour of are toilet wipes. Although they may not seem very eco-friendly, this is one place where you don’t want to compromise on hygiene and it may even be possible to train the rest of the household to use them! If you don’t reseal the pack properly they can dry out, but don’t worry, just put them under the tap, they still work.
